When Dr. Beerelli Seshi contacted me by email two years ago about his idea of learning five languages simultaneously; I must be very honest, I was quite skeptical about it. As a scholar who studies language acquisition, I believe that languages are much more than tables of comparison and memorized structures. Learning a language, is to be able to communicate, connect, and interact with the other. It is a way to become a transcultural citizen. And in the context of India, that is, in my opinion, the ultimate goal when speaking of languages cohabiting one next to the other. Since the time he first contacted me, he has impressively developed his idea and I am pleased to comment on it.
Given the particular linguistic situation in India, where there is no accepted national language and where at least twenty-two official state languages are spoken in the country, it is relevant to find ways for inclusion and promotion of communication among every citizen. Dr. Seshi’s idea of a digital/PDF textbook where five languages are taught by using the same materials/topics is, in fact, groundbreaking in that aspect. Is the proposed methodology the preferred one through the lenses of the experts? Probably not, but what we can most certainly say, is that this proposal is a gigantic step in the direction of inclusion and expansion of understanding among people, especially in the context of India.
Dr. Seshi’s proposal envisions teaching five selected languages through the use of the same learning materials. As he showed both as part of his website and eBook, the model lesson on India’s national symbols illustrates his methodology by including standalone and sentence-by-sentence and word-by-word in five languages and equally important audio recording by native speakers of each language. Initially, his target public to the launch of this project are students enrolled at the elementary school levels. He elaborated his plans for teaching four different alphabets to 3–5 year-old children in the Alphabetics section. He aims for this project to become included in the local schools, and in the online academy for children and adults alike. He envisions a collaborative work among instructors of these five languages in joint sessions in both school and online.
This Multi-Languaging project will show the community of learners and teachers, by its use, if the proposed methodology will, in fact, be the best for this particular context. The methodology proposed does not answer relevant questions to language acquisition, included but not limited to how the material promotes communicative skills, interpersonal skills, ability to use the language in a communication setting, grammar acquisition and development, and others, despite the FAQs touching the subject. However, and most certainly, with feedback by the users, the author will be able to adjust and improve his already impressive work.
In sum, this is a tremendously ambitious and highly relevant project that deserves a closer look, especially in the specific context of India.
I am truly impressed with the quality of work that Dr. Seshi has presented in this website, https://multilanguaging.org/. It is difficult to even imagine how this large volume of work is created given the limited time and resources we all have! This massive and multifaceted project must be the fruit of a tremendous focus, complete dedication, and sustained research effort at various levels. This website provides a very rich and quite comprehensive set of academic and cultural information for multicultural, multilingual readers. I highly recommend reviewing the materials in this website particularly by the bilingual/ bicultural communities who are currently involved in academia (students, teachers, researchers, etc.). I am Zbigniew A. Chertlur, a 12-year-old from Poland, now studying in London. I just entered Grade 8. Music and Acting are my passion along with animation creation. I can sing in 10 languages that I cannot actually speak or understand. I have so far mastered and sung 200 songs in Telugu, for example. I love India as much as I love my Motherland Poland.
How many languages can one learn at a time? Well, I am talking about children aged from above 3 years. It really comes as a surprise if one says that they can learn multiple languages at a time without getting confused. Many a time parents do get carried away by the fact that their children will not be grasping multiple languages at a time. This is a myth, not correct.
All they need is right resource, correct exposure, consistent lessons with activities, setting a goal to achieve fluency and lastly creating fun atmosphere in learning a new language. There are many ways to create but one needs patience and an orientation to make a child learn multiple languages.
If a child needs 5 different teachers to teach 5 different languages, it is true that a child is burdened because of the proper ambience that could not be provided. I came across one website created by Dr. Beerelli Seshi in connection with learning 5 different languages. I found it especially interesting, and I believe that Dr. Seshi cracked the method for learning multiple languages by children on their own or with a little assistance in the initial stage. If one source is needed where a child can learn 5 languages at a time, I would strongly recommend Dr. Seshi’s concurrent multilingual approach/website for learning/teaching of five different languages for children from class 1 to class 10.
Dr. Beerelli Seshi, the creative founder of this wonderful concept and website has clearly explained how a child can develop skills in learning 5 languages at a time, irrespective of what languages a child speaks at home. The website teaches how to master 5 Indian languages together, or 7 European languages together. The interesting aspect is that every sentence, every word has translations and transliterations and has voiceover facility for one to understand how a word can be pronounced correctly. In fact, every word has been voiced over by native speakers which makes it extremely easy to understand and pronounce correctly.
My immediate concern was how easy or how difficult will it be for a child to understand the operation of the website? I found it especially easy and was able to go through every section without any help of a 2nd person as I am 12 years old. It is true an elderly guidance is necessary for a child who is in class 1, 2 and 3 and by the time he/she is in class 4 they would understand how to go about learning 5 languages at a time. Dr. Seshi created a user-friendly and uncomplicated website for the children. Without any delay I strongly recommend for you to start going through https://indian.multilanguaging.org/.
I found some interesting aspects in the Model Lesson I where the meanings of Indian National Symbols are clearly explained in 5 Indian languages with audio-visuals (photos and voiceovers) with sentence-by-sentence formats and word-by-word formats in excel sheets. It is true that an audio-visual presentation is much easier and interesting than just reading plain text. This learning through the website created by Dr. Seshi is a welcome change for those who want to learn 5 different languages. It is also true that his method given on the website is different and more efficient when compared to the “good old” method of learning in schools where they teach different content in different languages.
Dr. Seshi promises, as stated on the website, more will be forthcoming in future. Audio-visual materials, and nursey rhymes in 5 languages for 3–5 year-old children for learning 4 alphabets used by these 5 languages, will be made available. Also, 5-language textbooks for all classes will be offered, all FREE of charge. I am looking forward to the dawn of that day.
Once Dr. Seshi’s website is understood, it will not be an overstatement to say that learning 5 languages will be a breeze/ or easy enough. All one needs to do is to go through the methodology of self-learning through the sentence-by-sentence in five languages and word-by-word excel sheets of the Model lesson I. I understood that this method of learning multiple languages needs a good public recognition and I wish all educational institutions do come forward to understand the work initiated by Dr. Seshi and take it ahead from there.
I also believe every change needs an innovative concept to be adapted into the system of daily practice. I truly found the concept of multilingual learning designed by Dr. Seshi is exceptionally innovative and accommodative. I have a good understanding of how the languages are taught in Indian schools where three languages are taught as compulsion. An additional two languages would be a feather in a cap to every student if they prefer to learn, and the website created by Dr. Seshi https://indian.multilanguaging.org/ would definitely be very useful to every aspiring child who wants to be a master in 5 languages. Currently the website is designed to learn/ teach Sanskrit, Hindi, Telugu, English, and Urdu together, or 7 European languages together. What I liked the most on the website is that Sanskrit can be learnt which I believe is the mother of all Indian and European languages, or highly influenced them if not the mother in some cases, but it is hardly spoken in India where it was born.
I not only recommend the https://indian.multilanguaging.org/ to others but I will also be using it to improve my own language skills in Indian languages, especially Sanskrit. మా పాఠశాల అధ్యక్షుడు డాక్టర్ శేషి గారి ప్రణాళిక గురించి నాకు చెప్పినప్పుడు, నాకు ఎంతో విస్మయంగా అనిపించింది. ఎందుకంటే, తెలుగు భాష కోసం కొత్త విద్యా వనరులు మరియు సాంకేతిక పరిజ్ఞానాన్ని సృష్టించడాన్ని ప్రోత్సహించడంలో సహాయపడటం నా కొత్త జీవిత లక్ష్యాలలో ఒకటి. సరిగ్గా అదే పని ఇప్పుడు డాక్టర్ శేషి గారు చేస్తున్నారు, చెప్పాలంటే అంతకంటే ఎక్కువే చేస్తున్నారు అనుకోండి! తెలుగు భాష, అదేవిధంగా భారతదేశంలోని అన్ని ఇతర అందమైన భాషలు పూర్తిగా ఆంగ్లీకరించబడకుండా ఉండటానికి మరింత మంది తెలుగు ప్రజలు ఇలాంటి ప్రణాళికలపై ఆసక్తి కనబరిచి తమ తోడ్పాటును తెలుపుతారని నేను ఆశిస్తున్నాను.
భాషలను నేర్చుకోవటానికి డాక్టర్ శేషి గారి యొక్క విధానం చాలా తార్కికమైనదిగా ఉంటుంది: ఎందుకంటే ఈ విధానంలో మనం ప్రతీ పదం యొక్క అర్ధం విడివిడిగా తెలుసుకోవడమే కాకుండా, పూర్తి వాక్యం యొక్క అనువాదం కూడా నేర్చుకుంటాము, అదే సమయంలో దాన్ని ఎలా పలకాలో వచనం నుండి స్వరాన్నికూడా వింటాము. మనము ఒక పదాన్ని చూడటం మరియు వినడం ఒకేసారి జరిగినప్పుడు, మనం దానిని కొన్ని సార్లు అనుకరిస్తాము, అలా చేయడం వలన మనకు విశ్వాసం పెరుగుతుంది మరియు ఆ పదాన్ని మన జ్ఞాపక శక్తికి చేరుస్తాము, ఆ విధంగా మనము మామూలుగా కంటే వేగంగా భాషను నేర్చుకోవచ్చు.

When the President of our school told me about Dr. Seshi’s project, I was instantly intrigued as one of my new life missions is to help promote the creation of new educational resources and technologies for the Telugu language - which is exactly what Dr. Seshi is doing, plus more. I hope more Telugu people gain interest and support for such projects to help keep the Telugu language from becoming completely anglicized - as well as all the other beautiful languages of India.
Dr. Seshi’s approach to learning languages is very logical: Learn the word-by-word meanings along with full-sentence translations across multiple languages while also listening to the audio. When we both see and hear a word, then mimic it a few times, we gain confidence and better encode that word to memory therefore learning faster than we would have otherwise.
This is nearly identical to how I am currently studying and tutoring others in Telugu, but even just learning a single language this way takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to create such materials. Dr. Seshi has prepared materials for learning in five languages using the same content, making it a much more efficient process. It helps to compare words and sentences in five languages and understand how they relate. The model lesson on India’s national symbols is a great example of this. I would personally love to study Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, or other Indian languages in the future, but with the Multi-Languaging approach, I could learn all simultaneously.
In my opinion, efforts like these are what we need to advance our world. India would become a prime example for the rest of the world for the advancement of language. India is already a step in the right direction with many children learning more than one language.
When we learn multiple languages, learning additional languages becomes much easier. If you’ve ever dreamed of learning a new language, imagine if you were taught from a young age how to acquire languages quickly and effectively. Of course we can learn languages at any age, but we can also help to provide the foundation for future generations to learn more seamlessly, that’s what Dr. Seshi is doing with his Multi-Languaging program. One of the most common dreams or hobbies in our world is to travel. We have a natural instinct to want to explore new areas once we know they exist. Multi-Languaging may help towards enabling the future of exploration.
I believe efforts like these are essential, especially in the current climate of divisiveness. The diversity and peace that our world is seeking will come through learning about one another’s cultures and languages. When we don’t understand what’s out there, it scares us, causing tension and disconnect in our world. If we want peace, we need to step out of Plato’s cave (our respective countries/cultures) and gain an understanding of one another.
Dr. Seshi is providing the entire Multi-Languaging program for FREE as a non-profit. I commend him for taking on such a noble and ambitious project.

My mom has always instilled in me an inherent motivation to seek out new opportunities for learning and growth. She met Dr. Seshi through work and was fascinated by his astuteness and enthusiasm about teaching others. Instantly, I too was captivated by Dr. Seshi’s ability to speak multiple languages, as I was trying to learn Spanish at the time. I graduated college from Eastern Kentucky University with a double major in Spanish and Psychology and studied abroad in Costa Rica during my time there. I learned numerous tips and tricks to enhance my knowledge about the Spanish culture and language in general. I quickly learned that interactive apps, websites, and videos are what facilitated learning the best for me. Understanding how difficult it can be to learn a language has made me appreciate the people that have the determination and willpower to do so. Language is one of the most beautiful aspects of human culture. Learning another language gives you the opportunity to engage with the world in a more intimate and meaningful way, especially with those who are different from you. Human beings are social creatures and one of the most rewarding aspects of the human experience is the ability to connect with others. Therefore, being able to communicate with someone in their own language is a spectacular gift. Taking it upon yourself to expand your knowledge by immersing yourself in another culture expands your ability to connect and understand the world from a different point of view.
Not only is knowing another language a source of personal empowerment, but also professionally. Being bilingual is a skill that can and will set you apart from other professionals in your field. With the increasing amount of diversity in the United States, the demand of bilingual professionals is also increasing. Dr. Seshi’s methodology to learn multiple languages at once is brilliant. Presenting all languages simultaneously allows for the learner to make connections and parallels between words and phrases, which enhances the experience. One of the most difficult parts of learning another language is the ability to speak and effectively communicate verbally. Learning grammar and memorizing vocabulary is only half the battle, the real difficulty comes when trying to verbally communicate with others who speak a different language. This methodology utilizes a communicative approach where the focus is on providing students with real and contextualized input for them to communicate effectively. This approach is evident from the model lesson on India’s national symbols as it commendably uses text to speech in different formats, standalone and sentence-by-sentence and word-by-word in five languages by employing a native speaker of the respective language. Similarly, the interactive language map of India in five languages is both informative and intriguing as it uncovers each individual state’s own language diversity by clicking on its map. Overall, this new method of learning multiple languages at once is a great opportunity that people of all ages can utilize to enhance their human experience.

భాషలు వేరైనా భావాలు ఒక్కటే
బహు భాషా వాదం లేదా దృక్పథం ద్వారా విశ్వంలో ఏకాత్మ భావన లేదా దృక్పథం ఏర్పడుతుందనే ఆశయంతో ఏర్పడిన డా|| శేషిగారి అంతర్జాతీయ కేంద్రం లేదా అకాడమీకి నేను ఆహ్వానం పలుకుతున్నాను. వసుధైక కుటుంబ భావన అందరిలో నిర్మాణం కావాలని భావించింది భారతీయ సాహిత్యం.
“వీరు నా వారు వీరు పరాయివారు అని యెవరు భావిస్తారో వారు అల్ప మనస్కులు. ఉదాత్త గుణశీల చరిత్రలు ఉన్నవారు ఈ ప్రపంచమంతా ఒకే కుటుంబమని భావిస్తారు.”
రెండు వేల సంవత్సరాల క్రితం ఈ దేశంలో ఈ భావన ఉంది. అంతేగాక ప్రపంచంలోని సర్వప్రాణుల్లోని ఆత్మ (Soul) ఒకటే అన్న దార్శనిక తత్త్వాన్ని భారతదేశంలో ఆర్ష సాహిత్యమే అందించింది.
“కుండలెన్ని ఉన్నా మట్టి మాత్రం ఒకటే. సొమ్ములెన్ని ఉన్నా బంగారం మాత్రం ఒకటే. గోవులెన్ని ఉన్నా (ఎన్ని రంగుల్లో ఉన్నా) పాలు మాత్రం ఒకే రంగులో ఉంటాయి. అదేవిధంగా ప్రాణుల దేహాలెన్ని విధాలుగా ఉన్నా ఆ దేహాల్లోని ఆత్మ (పరమాత్మ) ఒకటే.”
ఈ భావన వివిధ భాషల్లోకి వెళ్లాలి. వ్యక్తుల మధ్య ఏకతా భావన నిర్మాణం చేయాలంటే ప్రతి వ్యక్తి తన మాతృ భాషనే గాక మరిన్న భాషలు నేర్చుకోవాలి. ఈ నేర్చుకోవడం అనేది తులనాత్మక అధ్యయనానికి, భాషల మధ్య ఆదాన - ప్రదానాలకు దోహదం చేస్తుంది.
విశ్వవిద్యాలయాల్లో సామెతలపై, పొడుపుకథలపై, జానపద గేయాలపై, జానపద కథలపై పరిశోధనలు చేసిన వారు అయిదారు భాషల్లో ఇవి ఎలా ఉన్నాయో పరిశీలించి తులనాత్మకంగా పరిశోధించి వాటిలో ఉన్న ఏకతా భావాన్ని ఫలితంగా అందించారు. ఆ సమయంలో వారికి రాని భాషలను కూడా తెలుసుకొని భాషల మధ్యన ఉన్న భావబంధుత్వాన్ని వారు లోకానికి తెలియజేశారు.
మానవ సంబంధాలను పటిష్ఠం చేయడానికి ముఖ్యంగా ఉపయోగపడేది భాషే. డా|| శేషిరెడ్డి గారి బహుభాషా కేంద్రం ప్రతిపాదిస్తున్న ఐదు భాషలు (హిందీ, ఉర్దూ, సంస్కృతం, ఇంగ్లీషు, ఏదైనా ఒక దేశీ భాష) ఏకకాలంలో అధ్యయనం చేయడం సాధ్యమే. అయితే ఇది ఏదో ఒక భాషపై పట్టు సాధించడం వల్ల, ఇతర భాషల్ని పోల్చుకొని అధ్యయనం చేసే ఆసక్తి కలుగుతుంది.
అయితే ఇది ఏ స్థాయిలో జరగాలనేది బహుభాషా అకాడమీ / కేంద్రం కమిటీ నిర్ణయం తీసుకొంటుంది. ఈ అయిదు భాషలు లేదా పది పదకొండు భాషలు ఏకార్ధ పదజాలంతోనే వికాసానికి దోహదం చేస్తాయి. ఈ విశాల విశ్వంలో అందరినీ కలిపి నడపడానికి బహుభాషా అధ్యయనం దోహదం చేస్తుందనీ, ఆత్మశక్తినీ - విశ్వాసాన్ని (Self Confidence) పెంచుతుందని భావించే సంకల్పం కలుగుతుంది.
అన్నిటికన్నా ముఖ్యంగా ఆయా భాషలు అందించిన సాహిత్యాన్ని, సంస్కృతిని, కళల్ని, ఆధ్యాత్మిక తత్త్వాల్ని, శాస్త్ర సాంకేతిక వైజ్ఞానిక అంశాల్ని పోల్చి తెలుసుకొని భాషలు వేరైనా భావాలు ఒక్కటే అని నిర్ణయించుకొనే అవకాశం కలుగుతుంది.
డా|| శేషిరెడ్డి గారి ఈ బహుభాషా విశ్వవిద్యాలయం సాధించే అపూర్వ ప్రయోజనమిదే.
అయితే ఇది ఒక్కరితో - ఇద్దరితో అయ్యే పని కాదు. ఆలోచన ఒక్కరితో మొదలై వందలు - వేలు - లక్షలు - కోట్ల వైపు సాగిపోతుంది. విశ్వమానవ సౌహార్ధతను (Universal Brotherhood) మించిన ఏకాత్మ వాదానికి (Integral Oneness) ఇది దోహదం చేస్తుంది. అందుకే డా|| శేషిరెడ్డి గారి ఈ ఆలోచనలను సమర్థిస్తున్నాను; స్వాగతిస్తున్నాను.

Languages may be different, but concepts are same
I welcome the International Centre/Academy of Dr. Seshi that was established with the noble idea that multilingualism or a multilingual perspective would create a sense or perspective of unity in the universe. The Indian literature cherished the dream of building the concept of Vasudhaika Kutumbakam (the whole earth is one family) among all people.
"Those who think that these are my people and these are others, are mean people. Noble hearted people think of the world as a single family."
Two thousand years ago this feeling was flourishing in this country. In India, it is the Vedic literature (arsha sahityam) that first envisaged the philosophical vision of single soul in all living beings.
"There may be several earthen pots, but the soil is the same. There may be several ornaments, but gold is the same. There may be several cows (of any color), but the milk is the same color. In the same way, there may be several living beings with different physical bodies, but the soul (eternal soul) in those bodies is the same."
This concept should reach into all languages. If we want to build the feeling of unity between peoples, every individual should learn not only his or her mother tongue but also several other languages. This learning leads to comparative study, and mutual communication between languages.
People who have done research studies on proverbs, riddles, folk songs, and folk tales in universities have done a comparative study of how they are in five or six languages and have shown the sense of oneness among them. While doing so, they have also learnt unknown languages and shown to the world the emotional/conceptual relationship between the languages.
To strengthen the human relationships, what mainly helps is language only. It is quite possible to study simultaneously the five languages (Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, English, any one of the indigenous languages) being proposed by Dr. Seshi Reddy’s Multi-Languaging Centre. However, by achieving proficiency in any one language, interest develops to study other languages by comparing them.
If so, the Multi-Languaging Academy Central Committee will decide at what level it should be conducted. These five languages or ten to eleven languages help to develop the identical meaning vocabulary. The multilingual study helps marching ahead together in this vast universe and creates a resolve to think that it boosts inner energy and self-confidence.
Most importantly, by a comparative study of the literature, culture, arts, spiritual philosophy, science, and technology contributed by various languages, it gives an opportunity to be convinced that those languages may be different, but ideas are similar.
This is the unprecedented benefit/objective being achieved by Dr. Seshi Reddy’s Multi-Languaging Academy.
But this cannot be achieved by one or two people. Any thought/motive starts with one individual and progresses towards hundreds -thousands -lakhs (100,000’s) -crores (10,000,000’s). This will contribute to Integral Oneness surpassing even Universal Brotherhood. That is why I support; welcome the ideas of Dr. Seshi Reddy.

Despite being a medical doctor by profession, Dr. Seshi has a keen interest in different languages. His mother tongue is Telugu; however, he is familiar with Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit and English.

While he cannot speak languages such as German, French, Italian, Greek (Spanish and Latin), he certainly possesses the skills to familiarize the linguists of these languages with his teaching-method.

The proof of Dr. Seshi’s love for Urdu lies in the fact that it is the only language of 11 languages in this program which is written right to left. He must obviously have faced technical difficulties but which he has cheerfully overcome.

Roadmap for an inclusive society
In several contexts, today, we talk about the “Global Village”. Global Village means the togetherness of the people. To achieve this togetherness, Dr. Seshi has chosen languages as a tool. He has chosen five languages to be taught at a time in the classroom and he entitled this unique program as “Multi ∞ Languaging”.
In this program a student can study five languages simultaneously in a comparative mode of learning. He has taken English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Hindi, and the mother tongue of the learner.
As the International language, English is a must, and Hindi and Urdu are twin languages but are dressed differently. The Sanskrit language, as it has some commonality of vocabulary to every language, maintains a relationship with many languages of the world. Sanskrit being the language of the ages and with its rich literature it has its own vigorous appeal among the languages.
Today maybe some scholars say that Sanskrit is a fossilized language, but they cannot ignore the virtue of its literature across the world and its daughter languages across India. At one time during the Vedic period Sanskrit had reached its Zenith. By teaching Sanskrit together with its daughter languages, it could soon become a live language again and regain its grandeur.
Dr. Seshi, as mentioned in his motto “Diversity is Our Pedigree”, has taken languages as his instruments to continue the pedigree by protecting diversity. To create an inclusive society, we should promote the acceptance of plurality. In this pluralistic world everyone should learn two things. The first is acceptance and the second is tolerance. To accept and to tolerate, we should understand each other. To understand one another, sharing language is essential.
In our modern world, we are all interdependent. To understand and practice interdependence multi-languaging is a necessity. To achieve Dr. Seshi's dream about inclusive society and one world, multi-languaging is the foundation.
If one considers the practicality of this project, first it should be introduced into the school system as a pedagogy program. It should be given sufficient space in the curriculum. Then the generations will learn how to understand other tongues while sustaining our own. I wish Seshi Reddy Garu success in his journey for multilingual learning classroom.

I met Dr. Seshi over 30 years ago when he joined me as a faculty member of the University of Rochester Medical Center. We have kept in close touch over the years, as I have followed his clinical and research career in Pathology, and in particular as we have discussed his broad interests in diverse fields of human endeavour. I see Multi-Languaging as the fruit of a mind that has always sought creative and rational connections and a natural order in the world. Dr. Seshi's curriculum emphasizes the well-known relationship amongst languages spoken in India, Europe, and across the world. The motivating concept is that if one needs to learn multiple languages (as is the case in India and other countries), learning and comprehension will be more efficiently achieved if the languages are taught together with the same curriculum. Students can see right away their shared lineage, which will reinforce memory and meaning. We do this already when we comment on the origin of an English word in Latin (I had fun with my granddaughter exploring the made-up names of Harry Potter's spells and curses!). I find it's much easier to remember meaning when I can recognize similar words and grammar across languages. Multi-Languaging is a more systematized way of making meaningful linkages among languages as students are learning. I was fascinated myself looking at the ways in which different languages aligned and diverged, as I observed the model lesson on India’s national symbols, sentence-by-sentence, and word-by-word in five languages. In today's diverse and connected world, our youth can only benefit from a deep-seated familiarity with multiple languages and the cultures they express.

The concept of teaching multiple languages by Dr. Seshi in a highly structured, simultaneous fashion is revolutionary, yet it seems so logical. In the modern world, exposure to multiple languages in our daily lives is quite common. As he has pointed out, India has twenty-two official languages and in North America, we have three dominant languages. In the future, it will become increasingly important to be able to communicate in more than a single language. My background is in medical research and when I was in graduate school, my best friend and study partner was fluent in French and English, although French was his primary language. We communicated in English, but in late night study sessions, when he was fatigued, he would frequently mix the two languages without realizing doing so. During these times, it would have been quite useful for me to understand French. What makes Dr. Seshi’s work in multi-language teaching so valuable is his unusually well-structured design and completeness. The line-by-line and word-by-word comparison in five or more languages within Excel makes learning far more efficient than sequential methods. Beerelli and I have been friends and colleagues for more than fifteen years, so it comes as no surprise to me that he has successfully tackled such a massive project. And that he has not just tackled it, but he has organized it in such a masterful and complete way. In our global society it is more important than ever for our citizenry and political leaders to communicate as effectively as possible with people within our localities as well as with those from other countries. It appears to me that Dr. Seshi’s Multi-Languaging initiative holds the potential to greatly improve communication skills of people throughout the world.
I had the lovely fortune in the 1980s to spend 3 years at Yale as a colleague of the brilliant, kind, and creative Dr. Seshi. Our paths diverged, and I have had to follow his illustrious academic career from a distance. Every few years, I catch up on his newest achievements as a pathologist, inventor, professor, and medical scientist. Dr. Seshi's most recent creative burst does not surprise me. He has turned his powerful intellect toward revolutionizing language education in his home country. His goal is to unify, through a bold vision of multiple shared languages, the understanding of 1.4 billion people in India — and other billions scattered over the earth.
His proposal is timely and necessary. The world has seen how delicate and precious the frameworks of democracy and global cooperation are. It is clearer than ever that they are strongest when people are able to share an understanding of issues, facts, and choices and to understand something about each other. Common language makes those things possible. Dr. Seshi’s Multi-Languaging proposal can form the basis for a uniformly informed and empathetic Indian populace. It can do the same wherever it is successfully implemented.
The aims of Dr. Seshi’s proposal, for every child in school to learn five languages at once, are bold, even audacious. Can anyone — not only a gold-medal winning top student like Dr. Seshi — achieve them? Of course. Studies show that almost anyone at any age can acquire new languages. Many peoples, from the Caribbean to Europe to India, already speak five or more languages. One theoretical beauty of Dr. Seshi’s proposal is that its parallel instruction and identical curriculum in all five languages will enable them to be learned simultaneously. It will be exciting to find out that Multi-Languaging’s innovative methods are as effective as one would expect.
The proposal is worth pursuing. Studies have demonstrated physiological, personal, social, economic, and political benefits of multilingualism. Moreover, the five languages in Dr. Seshi's proposal include invaluable local and classical ones, like Sanskrit, that might otherwise disappear. In India, being the world's largest democracy and having over 1,700 languages, the benefits could be revolutionary.
The greatest strength of Dr. Seshi’s proposal is its built-in invitation for evaluation and improvement. Knowledge about how children and adults acquire languages has exploded in recent decades. Effective practical methods to impart languages exist. Always a scientist, Dr. Seshi seeks — asks for — studies and suggestions to evaluate and optimize the process that he has designed. The non-profit status of the project is further evidence that he desires Multi-Languaging to lead toward proficiency in five languages. Tweaking the mechanism is part of the process.

Dr. Beerelli Seshi has asked me to review his method of multi-language learning. I am pleased to have reviewed it.
Dr. Seshi worked for me in 1989-90. I was the Chief of Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services and Residency Program Director at Madigan Army Medical Center, a 450-bed US Army teaching hospital in Tacoma, Washington. He held a position in clinical pathology but provided services in all areas of the department and teaching of residents. We had frequent daily interaction and became good friends in a short time. He was always thinking outside the box and was an asset in improving research concepts in our pathology program. We have maintained contact as I have always been interested in where his career in pathology and research took him.
It is no surprise that Dr. Seshi would go outside medicine and conceptualize a method of learning and teaching languages. This is a creative and a comprehensive undertaking. Although it has broad application, it would be of benefit to his home country of India where the multitude of languages creates divisions, disparities and barriers in education, commerce, and employment potential. Learning one language other than a native tongue has benefit, but to be able to learn more than one language simultaneously is efficient with a tremendously increased benefit. This method appears to be a novel approach as it involves learning five languages at once using the identical content in terms of sentences and vocabularies. It is efficient and potentially could propel the student far ahead in a short time. The student can visualize, listen, and examine the similarities and the differences all at the same time which to me would speed up learning over other methods of one-at-a-time language learning and having to make the comparisons one-at-a-time and draw one’s own associations.
I am a native English speaker but have lived in two non-English speaking European countries, The Netherlands and Germany. I became very proficient in Dutch and had only a rudimentary use of German. Knowing Dutch, a second language, has helped me extend myself into other cultures. This effort has always been reciprocated as my efforts are recognized and appreciated. It brings me into other worlds and I can’t help but think that if one or two languages does this, how much more I would gain by speaking multiple languages. When we speak another language, we open our world. Strangers become friends rather than mysteries. Suspicions are erased when we find others with similar family and life desires.
In my home my mother was a native of The Netherlands and my father had learned Dutch. Their association with others of The Netherlands was part of my growing up and extension beyond my borders. I later learned Dutch and regretted that I hadn’t learned it growing up as I lived in the Netherlands at age twenty and would have had a tremendous head start.
Those from India are already part of the great spread to every part of the world. This project would bring opportunities to an even greater part of those from India to enter the world in all fields much to the benefit of their native country.
I strongly recommend a close look at the potential benefits of Dr. Seshi’s program.

Learning Languages “The Scientific Way”
I grew up in small villages of southern India, where Telugu is the native language, but English and Hindi were taught to some extent in the schools. Only when I went to the Central University of Hyderabad to study Masters of Science, did I get exposed to multiple languages of India. So started my interaction with Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, etc. My move to the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru for Ph.D. extended my exposure to more languages, including Kannada and Tamil. But until I moved to Cologne, Germany, I didn’t realize the intimate connectivity between Sanskrit and German. Pronunciation of numbers 1 to 9 in Sanskrit and German are almost the same, even today. Further, just like in Sanskrit, also in German, the number in the tenth place is pronounced first. For example, 64 (Sixty-Four in English, Vier und Sechzig in German, Chatur Shashti in Sanskrit). However, the original languages such as Sanskrit are unfortunately fossilized today. Providing a practical way of learning these languages in tandem with modern languages, as detailed by Dr. Seshi, would be an outstanding service to human civilizations to come.
As a scientist in search to understand how material that became life on Earth has evolved in our solar system and beyond and as a scientist working in space exploration that is at the edge of impossibility, I know the value and impact of diversity. At my workplace we celebrate diversity and we have colleagues essentially from every part of the world. The diversity is maintained when pluralism is also nurtured. Pluralism is strengthened through cultures that speak different languages. Communication among those cultures is achieved through individuals taking interest in learning multiple languages. This eBook provides a platform to make that realistically achievable.
Exposure to world languages and world cultures enriched my life immensely and gave me the vision of pluralism and one humanity. I am sure, this eBook will provide such an opportunity for a large number of people across the nations and cultures of the world!

I came to know of Dr. Seshi’s language project when he was researching the feasibility of publishing an eBook related to this project. In our very first conversation, I told him that he was working on a great mission and that this will be his gift to the future generations. Many of the world’s problems can easily be solved if we bring down the language barriers. By learning a new language, we also tend to learn about the culture of the region/country where that language is spoken.
While the inspiration for this project came from the diversity that we all see in India, this topic is relevant for all the countries, especially the US, a nation of immigrants where we continue to connect and get inspired by diverse cultures. Growing up in India, I could learn only 3 languages and after migrating to the US (Texas) I always wanted to learn Spanish, but I find it too challenging to learn it now as an adult. If I could relive my life, I would use Dr. Seshi’s multi-language learning technique and grow up learning at least 7 different languages (including Spanish). This technique teaches languages as I would learn other school subjects like physics, chemistry, in a relational and logical way.
I am glad that I was able to encourage Seshiji and share my publishing knowledge with him. His perseverance and determination to get this project completed is admirable. It is my hope that all schools will adopt Dr. Seshi’s unique method of learning multiple languages simultaneously.

The languages are the greatest and earliest inventions of mankind that helped in the evolution of so many civilizations and cultures across the world. Now with the improved transportation and communications, the whole world became a global village being brought onto one platform for social, political, and commercial reasons. This makes it important to understand each other for mutual benefits and to avoid misunderstandings leading to conflicts, with the ultimate desired goal being world peace. For this purpose it is in our best interests to learn as many languages as possible.
Dr. Seshi with much hard work developed a novel program in significant detail to make it easier to learn multiple languages simultaneously. The method highlights the inherent similarities of alphabets, words, sentences, and their development as well as grammar. I am confident that it is a wonderful beginning, and it will evolve into a great final product for learning multiple languages at once.
It gives me great pleasure to write this note even though expressing my simplistic opinion of Dr. Seshi’s greatest endeavor. Furthermore, I am proud to say that Dr. Seshi is a graduate of our rural Noothankal High School of erstwhile Suryapet Taluk, Telangana, India, and it is no surprise that he distinguished himself in his subsequent medical and research career. Everything we know we learn through the medium of language. Knowledge could not be passed on from one generation to the next without language. Human civilizations would not be possible without language. Yet, most people take language for granted, as if it were something we are born with, like our eyes and ears. While serving a central role in human evolution, language has also been a dividing force. Countries have been divided by language, and they continue to be divided by languages across the globe. In India, we have different states separated from each other by language.
In this background, Dr. Beerelli Seshi’s proposal to enhance multilanguaging can provide a great social force to transform future generations of children into world citizens. People rightly love their language, and if future citizens love multiple languages, it will doubtless lead to greater understanding between people who speak different languages as their mother tongues. His proposed revolutionary method of using the same curriculum for different languages should expedite the process greatly. Those of us who are lucky enough to have learnt multiple languages know the distinctive pleasures of different languages―some are great for literature, others for romance, and yet others for scientific thinking.

I offer my profound thanks to the commentators. My first thought was to seek out a single prominent scholar who would write a FOREWORD to my work. Seek out I did, but soon I realized that it was neither fair nor feasible to find a single person who would do full justice to my work and be willing to shoulder the onus of taking such awesome responsibility. Instead, because language impacts every parent and child, and in that sense everybody has a stake in it, I decided to seek out opinions of individuals as diverse as I could assemble and publish their opinions in place of a conventional FOREWORD. These commentaries together offer a fuller picture of my work than otherwise would have been possible. Some of the commentators are my cherished colleagues/ friends, and others whom I did not know before. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for the magnificent help they have given by taking a stand and articulating their thoughts. It is my fervent hope that uninitiated readers will identify themselves with one or more of these opinions and be inspired to explore and experience the wonder and the possible benefits of Multi-Languaging.
Preserving the diversity of human languages is critical for the endurance of our collective civilization. Linguistic diversity may be likened to biodiversity in its global importance. The Multi-Languaging concept is applicable not only to India but also to the countries of Europe and elsewhere. In the specific context of India, it upholds the much-clamored value of learning one’s mother tongue and English, and it adds three pan-Indian languages, Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit. Multi-Languaging is expected to achieve the linguistic unification of India by preserving the linguistic diversity that it inhabits―not by bulldozing it by brutal wholesale Anglification that is threatening to the extent of annihilating the mother tongues. To cite one prevailing practice for example in the Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, an English medium student is given the option to choose either Telugu, Hindi, or Sanskrit, consequently some of the Telugu students would never learn Telugu. Many of these students don’t even speak good English, as I understand, and the percentage of English medium students is rising. This appalling “ground reality” is likely due to lack of an alternative until now. I propose Multi-Languaging as the clear alternative in these perilous times. I have claimed with a basis why my proposal is eminently feasible accruing precious benefits to the learner―YES, starting from preschool. As the old adage goes, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating”. Let’s create the required materials and test it.

When Dr. Beerelli Seshi contacted me by email two years ago about his idea of learning five languages simultaneously; I must be very honest, I was quite skeptical about it. As a scholar who studies language acquisition, I believe that languages are much more than tables of comparison and memorized structures. Learning a language, is to be able to communicate, connect, and interact with the other. It is a way to become a transcultural citizen. And in the context of India, that is, in my opinion, the ultimate goal when speaking of languages cohabiting one next to the other. Since the time he first contacted me, he has impressively developed his idea and I am pleased to comment on it.
Given the particular linguistic situation in India, where there is no accepted national language and where at least twenty-two official state languages are spoken in the country, it is relevant to find ways for inclusion and promotion of communication among every citizen. Dr. Seshi’s idea of a digital/PDF textbook where five languages are taught by using the same materials/topics is, in fact, groundbreaking in that aspect. Is the proposed methodology the preferred one through the lenses of the experts? Probably not, but what we can most certainly say, is that this proposal is a gigantic step in the direction of inclusion and expansion of understanding among people, especially in the context of India.
Dr. Seshi’s proposal envisions teaching five selected languages through the use of the same learning materials. As he showed both as part of his website and eBook, the model lesson on India’s national symbols illustrates his methodology by including standalone and sentence-by-sentence and word-by-word in five languages and equally important audio recording by native speakers of each language. Initially, his target public to the launch of this project are students enrolled at the elementary school levels. He elaborated his plans for teaching four different alphabets to 3–5 year-old children in the Alphabetics section. He aims for this project to become included in the local schools, and in the online academy for children and adults alike. He envisions a collaborative work among instructors of these five languages in joint sessions in both school and online.
This Multi-Languaging project will show the community of learners and teachers, by its use, if the proposed methodology will, in fact, be the best for this particular context. The methodology proposed does not answer relevant questions to language acquisition, included but not limited to how the material promotes communicative skills, interpersonal skills, ability to use the language in a communication setting, grammar acquisition and development, and others, despite the FAQs touching the subject. However, and most certainly, with feedback by the users, the author will be able to adjust and improve his already impressive work.
In sum, this is a tremendously ambitious and highly relevant project that deserves a closer look, especially in the specific context of India.

How many languages can one learn at a time? Well, I am talking about children aged from above 3 years. It really comes as a surprise if one says that they can learn multiple languages at a time without getting confused. Many a time parents do get carried away by the fact that their children will not be grasping multiple languages at a time. This is a myth, not correct.
All they need is right resource, correct exposure, consistent lessons with activities, setting a goal to achieve fluency and lastly creating fun atmosphere in learning a new language. There are many ways to create but one needs patience and an orientation to make a child learn multiple languages.
If a child needs 5 different teachers to teach 5 different languages, it is true that a child is burdened because of the proper ambience that could not be provided. I came across one website created by Dr. Beerelli Seshi in connection with learning 5 different languages. I found it especially interesting, and I believe that Dr. Seshi cracked the method for learning multiple languages by children on their own or with a little assistance in the initial stage. If one source is needed where a child can learn 5 languages at a time, I would strongly recommend Dr. Seshi’s concurrent multilingual approach/website for learning/teaching of five different languages for children from class 1 to class 10.
Dr. Beerelli Seshi, the creative founder of this wonderful concept and website has clearly explained how a child can develop skills in learning 5 languages at a time, irrespective of what languages a child speaks at home. The website teaches how to master 5 Indian languages together, or 7 European languages together. The interesting aspect is that every sentence, every word has translations and transliterations and has voiceover facility for one to understand how a word can be pronounced correctly. In fact, every word has been voiced over by native speakers which makes it extremely easy to understand and pronounce correctly.
My immediate concern was how easy or how difficult will it be for a child to understand the operation of the website? I found it especially easy and was able to go through every section without any help of a 2nd person as I am 12 years old. It is true an elderly guidance is necessary for a child who is in class 1, 2 and 3 and by the time he/she is in class 4 they would understand how to go about learning 5 languages at a time. Dr. Seshi created a user-friendly and uncomplicated website for the children. Without any delay I strongly recommend for you to start going through https://indian.multilanguaging.org/.
I found some interesting aspects in the Model Lesson I where the meanings of Indian National Symbols are clearly explained in 5 Indian languages with audio-visuals (photos and voiceovers) with sentence-by-sentence formats and word-by-word formats in excel sheets. It is true that an audio-visual presentation is much easier and interesting than just reading plain text. This learning through the website created by Dr. Seshi is a welcome change for those who want to learn 5 different languages. It is also true that his method given on the website is different and more efficient when compared to the “good old” method of learning in schools where they teach different content in different languages.
Dr. Seshi promises, as stated on the website, more will be forthcoming in future. Audio-visual materials, and nursey rhymes in 5 languages for 3–5 year-old children for learning 4 alphabets used by these 5 languages, will be made available. Also, 5-language textbooks for all classes will be offered, all FREE of charge. I am looking forward to the dawn of that day.
Once Dr. Seshi’s website is understood, it will not be an overstatement to say that learning 5 languages will be a breeze/ or easy enough. All one needs to do is to go through the methodology of self-learning through the sentence-by-sentence in five languages and word-by-word excel sheets of the Model lesson I. I understood that this method of learning multiple languages needs a good public recognition and I wish all educational institutions do come forward to understand the work initiated by Dr. Seshi and take it ahead from there.
I also believe every change needs an innovative concept to be adapted into the system of daily practice. I truly found the concept of multilingual learning designed by Dr. Seshi is exceptionally innovative and accommodative. I have a good understanding of how the languages are taught in Indian schools where three languages are taught as compulsion. An additional two languages would be a feather in a cap to every student if they prefer to learn, and the website created by Dr. Seshi https://indian.multilanguaging.org/ would definitely be very useful to every aspiring child who wants to be a master in 5 languages. Currently the website is designed to learn/ teach Sanskrit, Hindi, Telugu, English, and Urdu together, or 7 European languages together. What I liked the most on the website is that Sanskrit can be learnt which I believe is the mother of all Indian and European languages, or highly influenced them if not the mother in some cases, but it is hardly spoken in India where it was born.

మా పాఠశాల అధ్యక్షుడు డాక్టర్ శేషి గారి ప్రణాళిక గురించి నాకు చెప్పినప్పుడు, నాకు ఎంతో విస్మయంగా అనిపించింది. ఎందుకంటే, తెలుగు భాష కోసం కొత్త విద్యా వనరులు మరియు సాంకేతిక పరిజ్ఞానాన్ని సృష్టించడాన్ని ప్రోత్సహించడంలో సహాయపడటం నా కొత్త జీవిత లక్ష్యాలలో ఒకటి. సరిగ్గా అదే పని ఇప్పుడు డాక్టర్ శేషి గారు చేస్తున్నారు, చెప్పాలంటే అంతకంటే ఎక్కువే చేస్తున్నారు అనుకోండి! తెలుగు భాష, అదేవిధంగా భారతదేశంలోని అన్ని ఇతర అందమైన భాషలు పూర్తిగా ఆంగ్లీకరించబడకుండా ఉండటానికి మరింత మంది తెలుగు ప్రజలు ఇలాంటి ప్రణాళికలపై ఆసక్తి కనబరిచి తమ తోడ్పాటును తెలుపుతారని నేను ఆశిస్తున్నాను.
భాషలను నేర్చుకోవటానికి డాక్టర్ శేషి గారి యొక్క విధానం చాలా తార్కికమైనదిగా ఉంటుంది: ఎందుకంటే ఈ విధానంలో మనం ప్రతీ పదం యొక్క అర్ధం విడివిడిగా తెలుసుకోవడమే కాకుండా, పూర్తి వాక్యం యొక్క అనువాదం కూడా నేర్చుకుంటాము, అదే సమయంలో దాన్ని ఎలా పలకాలో వచనం నుండి స్వరాన్నికూడా వింటాము. మనము ఒక పదాన్ని చూడటం మరియు వినడం ఒకేసారి జరిగినప్పుడు, మనం దానిని కొన్ని సార్లు అనుకరిస్తాము, అలా చేయడం వలన మనకు విశ్వాసం పెరుగుతుంది మరియు ఆ పదాన్ని మన జ్ఞాపక శక్తికి చేరుస్తాము, ఆ విధంగా మనము మామూలుగా కంటే వేగంగా భాషను నేర్చుకోవచ్చు.

When the President of our school told me about Dr. Seshi’s project, I was instantly intrigued as one of my new life missions is to help promote the creation of new educational resources and technologies for the Telugu language - which is exactly what Dr. Seshi is doing, plus more. I hope more Telugu people gain interest and support for such projects to help keep the Telugu language from becoming completely anglicized - as well as all the other beautiful languages of India.
Dr. Seshi’s approach to learning languages is very logical: Learn the word-by-word meanings along with full-sentence translations across multiple languages while also listening to the audio. When we both see and hear a word, then mimic it a few times, we gain confidence and better encode that word to memory therefore learning faster than we would have otherwise.
This is nearly identical to how I am currently studying and tutoring others in Telugu, but even just learning a single language this way takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to create such materials. Dr. Seshi has prepared materials for learning in five languages using the same content, making it a much more efficient process. It helps to compare words and sentences in five languages and understand how they relate. The model lesson on India’s national symbols is a great example of this. I would personally love to study Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, or other Indian languages in the future, but with the Multi-Languaging approach, I could learn all simultaneously.
In my opinion, efforts like these are what we need to advance our world. India would become a prime example for the rest of the world for the advancement of language. India is already a step in the right direction with many children learning more than one language.
When we learn multiple languages, learning additional languages becomes much easier. If you’ve ever dreamed of learning a new language, imagine if you were taught from a young age how to acquire languages quickly and effectively. Of course we can learn languages at any age, but we can also help to provide the foundation for future generations to learn more seamlessly, that’s what Dr. Seshi is doing with his Multi-Languaging program. One of the most common dreams or hobbies in our world is to travel. We have a natural instinct to want to explore new areas once we know they exist. Multi-Languaging may help towards enabling the future of exploration.
I believe efforts like these are essential, especially in the current climate of divisiveness. The diversity and peace that our world is seeking will come through learning about one another’s cultures and languages. When we don’t understand what’s out there, it scares us, causing tension and disconnect in our world. If we want peace, we need to step out of Plato’s cave (our respective countries/cultures) and gain an understanding of one another.
Dr. Seshi is providing the entire Multi-Languaging program for FREE as a non-profit. I commend him for taking on such a noble and ambitious project.

My mom has always instilled in me an inherent motivation to seek out new opportunities for learning and growth. She met Dr. Seshi through work and was fascinated by his astuteness and enthusiasm about teaching others. Instantly, I too was captivated by Dr. Seshi’s ability to speak multiple languages, as I was trying to learn Spanish at the time. I graduated college from Eastern Kentucky University with a double major in Spanish and Psychology and studied abroad in Costa Rica during my time there. I learned numerous tips and tricks to enhance my knowledge about the Spanish culture and language in general. I quickly learned that interactive apps, websites, and videos are what facilitated learning the best for me. Understanding how difficult it can be to learn a language has made me appreciate the people that have the determination and willpower to do so. Language is one of the most beautiful aspects of human culture. Learning another language gives you the opportunity to engage with the world in a more intimate and meaningful way, especially with those who are different from you. Human beings are social creatures and one of the most rewarding aspects of the human experience is the ability to connect with others. Therefore, being able to communicate with someone in their own language is a spectacular gift. Taking it upon yourself to expand your knowledge by immersing yourself in another culture expands your ability to connect and understand the world from a different point of view.
Not only is knowing another language a source of personal empowerment, but also professionally. Being bilingual is a skill that can and will set you apart from other professionals in your field. With the increasing amount of diversity in the United States, the demand of bilingual professionals is also increasing. Dr. Seshi’s methodology to learn multiple languages at once is brilliant. Presenting all languages simultaneously allows for the learner to make connections and parallels between words and phrases, which enhances the experience. One of the most difficult parts of learning another language is the ability to speak and effectively communicate verbally. Learning grammar and memorizing vocabulary is only half the battle, the real difficulty comes when trying to verbally communicate with others who speak a different language. This methodology utilizes a communicative approach where the focus is on providing students with real and contextualized input for them to communicate effectively. This approach is evident from the model lesson on India’s national symbols as it commendably uses text to speech in different formats, standalone and sentence-by-sentence and word-by-word in five languages by employing a native speaker of the respective language. Similarly, the interactive language map of India in five languages is both informative and intriguing as it uncovers each individual state’s own language diversity by clicking on its map. Overall, this new method of learning multiple languages at once is a great opportunity that people of all ages can utilize to enhance their human experience.

భాషలు వేరైనా భావాలు ఒక్కటే
బహు భాషా వాదం లేదా దృక్పథం ద్వారా విశ్వంలో ఏకాత్మ భావన లేదా దృక్పథం ఏర్పడుతుందనే ఆశయంతో ఏర్పడిన డా|| శేషిగారి అంతర్జాతీయ కేంద్రం లేదా అకాడమీకి నేను ఆహ్వానం పలుకుతున్నాను. వసుధైక కుటుంబ భావన అందరిలో నిర్మాణం కావాలని భావించింది భారతీయ సాహిత్యం.
“వీరు నా వారు వీరు పరాయివారు అని యెవరు భావిస్తారో వారు అల్ప మనస్కులు. ఉదాత్త గుణశీల చరిత్రలు ఉన్నవారు ఈ ప్రపంచమంతా ఒకే కుటుంబమని భావిస్తారు.”
రెండు వేల సంవత్సరాల క్రితం ఈ దేశంలో ఈ భావన ఉంది. అంతేగాక ప్రపంచంలోని సర్వప్రాణుల్లోని ఆత్మ (Soul) ఒకటే అన్న దార్శనిక తత్త్వాన్ని భారతదేశంలో ఆర్ష సాహిత్యమే అందించింది.
“కుండలెన్ని ఉన్నా మట్టి మాత్రం ఒకటే. సొమ్ములెన్ని ఉన్నా బంగారం మాత్రం ఒకటే. గోవులెన్ని ఉన్నా (ఎన్ని రంగుల్లో ఉన్నా) పాలు మాత్రం ఒకే రంగులో ఉంటాయి. అదేవిధంగా ప్రాణుల దేహాలెన్ని విధాలుగా ఉన్నా ఆ దేహాల్లోని ఆత్మ (పరమాత్మ) ఒకటే.”
ఈ భావన వివిధ భాషల్లోకి వెళ్లాలి. వ్యక్తుల మధ్య ఏకతా భావన నిర్మాణం చేయాలంటే ప్రతి వ్యక్తి తన మాతృ భాషనే గాక మరిన్న భాషలు నేర్చుకోవాలి. ఈ నేర్చుకోవడం అనేది తులనాత్మక అధ్యయనానికి, భాషల మధ్య ఆదాన - ప్రదానాలకు దోహదం చేస్తుంది.
విశ్వవిద్యాలయాల్లో సామెతలపై, పొడుపుకథలపై, జానపద గేయాలపై, జానపద కథలపై పరిశోధనలు చేసిన వారు అయిదారు భాషల్లో ఇవి ఎలా ఉన్నాయో పరిశీలించి తులనాత్మకంగా పరిశోధించి వాటిలో ఉన్న ఏకతా భావాన్ని ఫలితంగా అందించారు. ఆ సమయంలో వారికి రాని భాషలను కూడా తెలుసుకొని భాషల మధ్యన ఉన్న భావబంధుత్వాన్ని వారు లోకానికి తెలియజేశారు.
మానవ సంబంధాలను పటిష్ఠం చేయడానికి ముఖ్యంగా ఉపయోగపడేది భాషే. డా|| శేషిరెడ్డి గారి బహుభాషా కేంద్రం ప్రతిపాదిస్తున్న ఐదు భాషలు (హిందీ, ఉర్దూ, సంస్కృతం, ఇంగ్లీషు, ఏదైనా ఒక దేశీ భాష) ఏకకాలంలో అధ్యయనం చేయడం సాధ్యమే. అయితే ఇది ఏదో ఒక భాషపై పట్టు సాధించడం వల్ల, ఇతర భాషల్ని పోల్చుకొని అధ్యయనం చేసే ఆసక్తి కలుగుతుంది.
అయితే ఇది ఏ స్థాయిలో జరగాలనేది బహుభాషా అకాడమీ / కేంద్రం కమిటీ నిర్ణయం తీసుకొంటుంది. ఈ అయిదు భాషలు లేదా పది పదకొండు భాషలు ఏకార్ధ పదజాలంతోనే వికాసానికి దోహదం చేస్తాయి. ఈ విశాల విశ్వంలో అందరినీ కలిపి నడపడానికి బహుభాషా అధ్యయనం దోహదం చేస్తుందనీ, ఆత్మశక్తినీ - విశ్వాసాన్ని (Self Confidence) పెంచుతుందని భావించే సంకల్పం కలుగుతుంది.
అన్నిటికన్నా ముఖ్యంగా ఆయా భాషలు అందించిన సాహిత్యాన్ని, సంస్కృతిని, కళల్ని, ఆధ్యాత్మిక తత్త్వాల్ని, శాస్త్ర సాంకేతిక వైజ్ఞానిక అంశాల్ని పోల్చి తెలుసుకొని భాషలు వేరైనా భావాలు ఒక్కటే అని నిర్ణయించుకొనే అవకాశం కలుగుతుంది.
డా|| శేషిరెడ్డి గారి ఈ బహుభాషా విశ్వవిద్యాలయం సాధించే అపూర్వ ప్రయోజనమిదే.
అయితే ఇది ఒక్కరితో - ఇద్దరితో అయ్యే పని కాదు. ఆలోచన ఒక్కరితో మొదలై వందలు - వేలు - లక్షలు - కోట్ల వైపు సాగిపోతుంది. విశ్వమానవ సౌహార్ధతను (Universal Brotherhood) మించిన ఏకాత్మ వాదానికి (Integral Oneness) ఇది దోహదం చేస్తుంది. అందుకే డా|| శేషిరెడ్డి గారి ఈ ఆలోచనలను సమర్థిస్తున్నాను; స్వాగతిస్తున్నాను.

Languages may be different, but concepts are same
I welcome the International Centre/Academy of Dr. Seshi that was established with the noble idea that multilingualism or a multilingual perspective would create a sense or perspective of unity in the universe. The Indian literature cherished the dream of building the concept of Vasudhaika Kutumbakam (the whole earth is one family) among all people.
"Those who think that these are my people and these are others, are mean people. Noble hearted people think of the world as a single family."
Two thousand years ago this feeling was flourishing in this country. In India, it is the Vedic literature (arsha sahityam) that first envisaged the philosophical vision of single soul in all living beings.
"There may be several earthen pots, but the soil is the same. There may be several ornaments, but gold is the same. There may be several cows (of any color), but the milk is the same color. In the same way, there may be several living beings with different physical bodies, but the soul (eternal soul) in those bodies is the same."
This concept should reach into all languages. If we want to build the feeling of unity between peoples, every individual should learn not only his or her mother tongue but also several other languages. This learning leads to comparative study, and mutual communication between languages.
People who have done research studies on proverbs, riddles, folk songs, and folk tales in universities have done a comparative study of how they are in five or six languages and have shown the sense of oneness among them. While doing so, they have also learnt unknown languages and shown to the world the emotional/conceptual relationship between the languages.
To strengthen the human relationships, what mainly helps is language only. It is quite possible to study simultaneously the five languages (Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, English, any one of the indigenous languages) being proposed by Dr. Seshi Reddy’s Multi-Languaging Centre. However, by achieving proficiency in any one language, interest develops to study other languages by comparing them.
If so, the Multi-Languaging Academy Central Committee will decide at what level it should be conducted. These five languages or ten to eleven languages help to develop the identical meaning vocabulary. The multilingual study helps marching ahead together in this vast universe and creates a resolve to think that it boosts inner energy and self-confidence.
Most importantly, by a comparative study of the literature, culture, arts, spiritual philosophy, science, and technology contributed by various languages, it gives an opportunity to be convinced that those languages may be different, but ideas are similar.
This is the unprecedented benefit/objective being achieved by Dr. Seshi Reddy’s Multi-Languaging Academy.
But this cannot be achieved by one or two people. Any thought/motive starts with one individual and progresses towards hundreds -thousands -lakhs (100,000’s) -crores (10,000,000’s). This will contribute to Integral Oneness surpassing even Universal Brotherhood. That is why I support; welcome the ideas of Dr. Seshi Reddy.

Roadmap for an inclusive society
In several contexts, today, we talk about the “Global Village”. Global Village means the togetherness of the people. To achieve this togetherness, Dr. Seshi has chosen languages as a tool. He has chosen five languages to be taught at a time in the classroom and he entitled this unique program as “Multi ∞ Languaging”.
In this program a student can study five languages simultaneously in a comparative mode of learning. He has taken English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Hindi, and the mother tongue of the learner.
As the International language, English is a must, and Hindi and Urdu are twin languages but are dressed differently. The Sanskrit language, as it has some commonality of vocabulary to every language, maintains a relationship with many languages of the world. Sanskrit being the language of the ages and with its rich literature it has its own vigorous appeal among the languages.
Today maybe some scholars say that Sanskrit is a fossilized language, but they cannot ignore the virtue of its literature across the world and its daughter languages across India. At one time during the Vedic period Sanskrit had reached its Zenith. By teaching Sanskrit together with its daughter languages, it could soon become a live language again and regain its grandeur.
Dr. Seshi, as mentioned in his motto “Diversity is Our Pedigree”, has taken languages as his instruments to continue the pedigree by protecting diversity. To create an inclusive society, we should promote the acceptance of plurality. In this pluralistic world everyone should learn two things. The first is acceptance and the second is tolerance. To accept and to tolerate, we should understand each other. To understand one another, sharing language is essential.
In our modern world, we are all interdependent. To understand and practice interdependence multi-languaging is a necessity. To achieve Dr. Seshi's dream about inclusive society and one world, multi-languaging is the foundation.
If one considers the practicality of this project, first it should be introduced into the school system as a pedagogy program. It should be given sufficient space in the curriculum. Then the generations will learn how to understand other tongues while sustaining our own. I wish Seshi Reddy Garu success in his journey for multilingual learning classroom.

I met Dr. Seshi over 30 years ago when he joined me as a faculty member of the University of Rochester Medical Center. We have kept in close touch over the years, as I have followed his clinical and research career in Pathology, and in particular as we have discussed his broad interests in diverse fields of human endeavour. I see Multi-Languaging as the fruit of a mind that has always sought creative and rational connections and a natural order in the world. Dr. Seshi's curriculum emphasizes the well-known relationship amongst languages spoken in India, Europe, and across the world. The motivating concept is that if one needs to learn multiple languages (as is the case in India and other countries), learning and comprehension will be more efficiently achieved if the languages are taught together with the same curriculum. Students can see right away their shared lineage, which will reinforce memory and meaning. We do this already when we comment on the origin of an English word in Latin (I had fun with my granddaughter exploring the made-up names of Harry Potter's spells and curses!). I find it's much easier to remember meaning when I can recognize similar words and grammar across languages. Multi-Languaging is a more systematized way of making meaningful linkages among languages as students are learning. I was fascinated myself looking at the ways in which different languages aligned and diverged, as I observed the model lesson on India’s national symbols, sentence-by-sentence, and word-by-word in five languages. In today's diverse and connected world, our youth can only benefit from a deep-seated familiarity with multiple languages and the cultures they express.

The concept of teaching multiple languages by Dr. Seshi in a highly structured, simultaneous fashion is revolutionary, yet it seems so logical. In the modern world, exposure to multiple languages in our daily lives is quite common. As he has pointed out, India has twenty-two official languages and in North America, we have three dominant languages. In the future, it will become increasingly important to be able to communicate in more than a single language. My background is in medical research and when I was in graduate school, my best friend and study partner was fluent in French and English, although French was his primary language. We communicated in English, but in late night study sessions, when he was fatigued, he would frequently mix the two languages without realizing doing so. During these times, it would have been quite useful for me to understand French. What makes Dr. Seshi’s work in multi-language teaching so valuable is his unusually well-structured design and completeness. The line-by-line and word-by-word comparison in five or more languages within Excel makes learning far more efficient than sequential methods. Beerelli and I have been friends and colleagues for more than fifteen years, so it comes as no surprise to me that he has successfully tackled such a massive project. And that he has not just tackled it, but he has organized it in such a masterful and complete way. In our global society it is more important than ever for our citizenry and political leaders to communicate as effectively as possible with people within our localities as well as with those from other countries. It appears to me that Dr. Seshi’s Multi-Languaging initiative holds the potential to greatly improve communication skills of people throughout the world.

I had the lovely fortune in the 1980s to spend 3 years at Yale as a colleague of the brilliant, kind, and creative Dr. Seshi. Our paths diverged, and I have had to follow his illustrious academic career from a distance. Every few years, I catch up on his newest achievements as a pathologist, inventor, professor, and medical scientist. Dr. Seshi's most recent creative burst does not surprise me. He has turned his powerful intellect toward revolutionizing language education in his home country. His goal is to unify, through a bold vision of multiple shared languages, the understanding of 1.4 billion people in India — and other billions scattered over the earth.
His proposal is timely and necessary. The world has seen how delicate and precious the frameworks of democracy and global cooperation are. It is clearer than ever that they are strongest when people are able to share an understanding of issues, facts, and choices and to understand something about each other. Common language makes those things possible. Dr. Seshi’s Multi-Languaging proposal can form the basis for a uniformly informed and empathetic Indian populace. It can do the same wherever it is successfully implemented.
The aims of Dr. Seshi’s proposal, for every child in school to learn five languages at once, are bold, even audacious. Can anyone — not only a gold-medal winning top student like Dr. Seshi — achieve them? Of course. Studies show that almost anyone at any age can acquire new languages. Many peoples, from the Caribbean to Europe to India, already speak five or more languages. One theoretical beauty of Dr. Seshi’s proposal is that its parallel instruction and identical curriculum in all five languages will enable them to be learned simultaneously. It will be exciting to find out that Multi-Languaging’s innovative methods are as effective as one would expect.
The proposal is worth pursuing. Studies have demonstrated physiological, personal, social, economic, and political benefits of multilingualism. Moreover, the five languages in Dr. Seshi's proposal include invaluable local and classical ones, like Sanskrit, that might otherwise disappear. In India, being the world's largest democracy and having over 1,700 languages, the benefits could be revolutionary.
The greatest strength of Dr. Seshi’s proposal is its built-in invitation for evaluation and improvement. Knowledge about how children and adults acquire languages has exploded in recent decades. Effective practical methods to impart languages exist. Always a scientist, Dr. Seshi seeks — asks for — studies and suggestions to evaluate and optimize the process that he has designed. The non-profit status of the project is further evidence that he desires Multi-Languaging to lead toward proficiency in five languages. Tweaking the mechanism is part of the process.

Dr. Beerelli Seshi has asked me to review his method of multi-language learning. I am pleased to have reviewed it.
Dr. Seshi worked for me in 1989-90. I was the Chief of Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services and Residency Program Director at Madigan Army Medical Center, a 450-bed US Army teaching hospital in Tacoma, Washington. He held a position in clinical pathology but provided services in all areas of the department and teaching of residents. We had frequent daily interaction and became good friends in a short time. He was always thinking outside the box and was an asset in improving research concepts in our pathology program. We have maintained contact as I have always been interested in where his career in pathology and research took him.
It is no surprise that Dr. Seshi would go outside medicine and conceptualize a method of learning and teaching languages. This is a creative and a comprehensive undertaking. Although it has broad application, it would be of benefit to his home country of India where the multitude of languages creates divisions, disparities and barriers in education, commerce, and employment potential. Learning one language other than a native tongue has benefit, but to be able to learn more than one language simultaneously is efficient with a tremendously increased benefit. This method appears to be a novel approach as it involves learning five languages at once using the identical content in terms of sentences and vocabularies. It is efficient and potentially could propel the student far ahead in a short time. The student can visualize, listen, and examine the similarities and the differences all at the same time which to me would speed up learning over other methods of one-at-a-time language learning and having to make the comparisons one-at-a-time and draw one’s own associations.
I am a native English speaker but have lived in two non-English speaking European countries, The Netherlands and Germany. I became very proficient in Dutch and had only a rudimentary use of German. Knowing Dutch, a second language, has helped me extend myself into other cultures. This effort has always been reciprocated as my efforts are recognized and appreciated. It brings me into other worlds and I can’t help but think that if one or two languages does this, how much more I would gain by speaking multiple languages. When we speak another language, we open our world. Strangers become friends rather than mysteries. Suspicions are erased when we find others with similar family and life desires.
In my home my mother was a native of The Netherlands and my father had learned Dutch. Their association with others of The Netherlands was part of my growing up and extension beyond my borders. I later learned Dutch and regretted that I hadn’t learned it growing up as I lived in the Netherlands at age twenty and would have had a tremendous head start.
Those from India are already part of the great spread to every part of the world. This project would bring opportunities to an even greater part of those from India to enter the world in all fields much to the benefit of their native country.
I strongly recommend a close look at the potential benefits of Dr. Seshi’s program.

Learning Languages “The Scientific Way”
I grew up in small villages of southern India, where Telugu is the native language, but English and Hindi were taught to some extent in the schools. Only when I went to the Central University of Hyderabad to study Masters of Science, did I get exposed to multiple languages of India. So started my interaction with Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, etc. My move to the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru for Ph.D. extended my exposure to more languages, including Kannada and Tamil. But until I moved to Cologne, Germany, I didn’t realize the intimate connectivity between Sanskrit and German. Pronunciation of numbers 1 to 9 in Sanskrit and German are almost the same, even today. Further, just like in Sanskrit, also in German, the number in the tenth place is pronounced first. For example, 64 (Sixty-Four in English, Vier und Sechzig in German, Chatur Shashti in Sanskrit). However, the original languages such as Sanskrit are unfortunately fossilized today. Providing a practical way of learning these languages in tandem with modern languages, as detailed by Dr. Seshi, would be an outstanding service to human civilizations to come.
As a scientist in search to understand how material that became life on Earth has evolved in our solar system and beyond and as a scientist working in space exploration that is at the edge of impossibility, I know the value and impact of diversity. At my workplace we celebrate diversity and we have colleagues essentially from every part of the world. The diversity is maintained when pluralism is also nurtured. Pluralism is strengthened through cultures that speak different languages. Communication among those cultures is achieved through individuals taking interest in learning multiple languages. This eBook provides a platform to make that realistically achievable.
Exposure to world languages and world cultures enriched my life immensely and gave me the vision of pluralism and one humanity. I am sure, this eBook will provide such an opportunity for a large number of people across the nations and cultures of the world!

This exceptional parallel method will, in part, encourage people to learn several languages, since it would take a fraction of the time needed to learn them separately.

I came to know of Dr. Seshi’s language project when he was researching the feasibility of publishing an eBook related to this project. In our very first conversation, I told him that he was working on a great mission and that this will be his gift to the future generations. Many of the world’s problems can easily be solved if we bring down the language barriers. By learning a new language, we also tend to learn about the culture of the region/country where that language is spoken.
While the inspiration for this project came from the diversity that we all see in India, this topic is relevant for all the countries, especially the US, a nation of immigrants where we continue to connect and get inspired by diverse cultures. Growing up in India, I could learn only 3 languages and after migrating to the US (Texas) I always wanted to learn Spanish, but I find it too challenging to learn it now as an adult. If I could relive my life, I would use Dr. Seshi’s multi-language learning technique and grow up learning at least 7 different languages (including Spanish). This technique teaches languages as I would learn other school subjects like physics, chemistry, in a relational and logical way.
I am glad that I was able to encourage Seshiji and share my publishing knowledge with him. His perseverance and determination to get this project completed is admirable. It is my hope that all schools will adopt Dr. Seshi’s unique method of learning multiple languages simultaneously.

The languages are the greatest and earliest inventions of mankind that helped in the evolution of so many civilizations and cultures across the world. Now with the improved transportation and communications, the whole world became a global village being brought onto one platform for social, political, and commercial reasons. This makes it important to understand each other for mutual benefits and to avoid misunderstandings leading to conflicts, with the ultimate desired goal being world peace. For this purpose it is in our best interests to learn as many languages as possible.
Dr. Seshi with much hard work developed a novel program in significant detail to make it easier to learn multiple languages simultaneously. The method highlights the inherent similarities of alphabets, words, sentences, and their development as well as grammar. I am confident that it is a wonderful beginning, and it will evolve into a great final product for learning multiple languages at once.
It gives me great pleasure to write this note even though expressing my simplistic opinion of Dr. Seshi’s greatest endeavor. Furthermore, I am proud to say that Dr. Seshi is a graduate of our rural Noothankal High School of erstwhile Suryapet Taluk, Telangana, India, and it is no surprise that he distinguished himself in his subsequent medical and research career. Everything we know we learn through the medium of language. Knowledge could not be passed on from one generation to the next without language. Human civilizations would not be possible without language. Yet, most people take language for granted, as if it were something we are born with, like our eyes and ears. While serving a central role in human evolution, language has also been a dividing force. Countries have been divided by language, and they continue to be divided by languages across the globe. In India, we have different states separated from each other by language.
In this background, Dr. Beerelli Seshi’s proposal to enhance multilanguaging can provide a great social force to transform future generations of children into world citizens. People rightly love their language, and if future citizens love multiple languages, it will doubtless lead to greater understanding between people who speak different languages as their mother tongues. His proposed revolutionary method of using the same curriculum for different languages should expedite the process greatly. Those of us who are lucky enough to have learnt multiple languages know the distinctive pleasures of different languages―some are great for literature, others for romance, and yet others for scientific thinking.
I am aware of the tireless effort Dr. Seshi has put into this endeavor, and I look forward to its ultimate successful implementation.
I offer my profound thanks to the commentators. My first thought was to seek out a single prominent scholar who would write a FOREWORD to my work. Seek out I did, but soon I realized that it was neither fair nor feasible to find a single person who would do full justice to my work and be willing to shoulder the onus of taking such awesome responsibility. Instead, because language impacts every parent and child, and in that sense everybody has a stake in it, I decided to seek out opinions of individuals as diverse as I could assemble and publish their opinions in place of a conventional FOREWORD. These commentaries together offer a fuller picture of my work than otherwise would have been possible. Some of the commentators are my cherished colleagues/ friends, and others whom I did not know before. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for the magnificent help they have given by taking a stand and articulating their thoughts. It is my fervent hope that uninitiated readers will identify themselves with one or more of these opinions and be inspired to explore and experience the wonder and the possible benefits of Multi-Languaging.
Preserving the diversity of human languages is critical for the endurance of our collective civilization. Linguistic diversity may be likened to biodiversity in its global importance. The Multi-Languaging concept is applicable not only to India but also to the countries of Europe and elsewhere. In the specific context of India, it upholds the much-clamored value of learning one’s mother tongue and English, and it adds three pan-Indian languages, Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit. Multi-Languaging is expected to achieve the linguistic unification of India by preserving the linguistic diversity that it inhabits―not by bulldozing it by brutal wholesale Anglification that is threatening to the extent of annihilating the mother tongues. To cite one prevailing practice for example in the Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, an English medium student is given the option to choose either Telugu, Hindi, or Sanskrit, consequently some of the Telugu students would never learn Telugu. Many of these students don’t even speak good English, as I understand, and the percentage of English medium students is rising. This appalling “ground reality” is likely due to lack of an alternative until now. I propose Multi-Languaging as the clear alternative in these perilous times. I have claimed with a basis why my proposal is eminently feasible accruing precious benefits to the learner―YES, starting from preschool. As the old adage goes, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating”. Let’s create the required materials and test it.
